On Monday, January 29, 2018, the US Senate defeated the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The bill needed 60 votes to pass and the bill fell by 51-46 votes. Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joined the Democrats voting against the bill. On the other hand, three Democrats voted for the bill, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, and Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly.

“This bill would have made a crime for doctors to perform abortions after 20 weeks of gestation. Under this bill, those breaking the law would face a fine, up to five years in prison, or both. The legislation contained exemptions in case of rape, incest and danger a pregnant women’s life. It did not contain exemptions from fetal abnormalities.”

Similar bill passed in the US House of Representatives in October, 2017. Already 20 states banned abortions after 20 weeks of gestation.

The baby’s heart starts to beat in the womb at around 8 weeks and beating at a rate of 110 times per minute as an undisputed sign of life, and at 20 weeks it can feel pain. Abortions after 20 weeks are considered a criminal act. Unfortunately, many liberals, Pro Choice and supporters of Planned Parenthood in Congress reject these facts.

After this bill was defeated President Donald Trump stated, “It is disappointing that the bill was rejected.” He went further by stating, “We must defend those who cannot defend themselves. I urge the Senate to reconsider its decision and pass legislation that will celebrate, cherish, and protect life.”

Our Florida US Senator Marco Rubio (R), voted for this bill. On the other hand, Florida US Senator Bill Nelson (D), voted against this bill and it shows the lack of sensitivity by Sen. Nelson in protecting the unborn. In fact, Democrats in the Senate and in the House consistently act like “programmed robots” voting against the protection of human life. This shows you the need to vote Senator Nelson out office in November and elect a new Senator supporting Pro life and conservative values to represent us in the Senate in Washington.
